The Maldives' Ministry of Finance is preparing to unveil the 2025 state budget on Thursday, adhering to the Finance Act requirement for budget presentation one month before the new fiscal year begins. This was confirmed during a recent meeting of the Parliament's Joint Sub-Committee of the Public Accounts Committee and the Economic Committee, where Deputy Speaker Naazim announced the schedule for Thursday’s budget session.
The Deputy Speaker emphasized the need to expedite the review of four government bills related to state revenue, noting the importance of finalizing these items before completing the main budget’s revenue estimates. "The Speaker has decided to hold the budget presentation session as mandated by the law on Thursday," Naazim stated, highlighting the urgency in addressing the current fiscal issues while ensuring that parliamentary members can propose suggestions within the limited timeframe.
The Finance Ministry has not yet disclosed the total budget for 2025, though recent adjustments in public expenditure were addressed last week through a supplementary budget of MVR 5.1 billion, aimed at covering the government's financial needs for the remainder of the year. The current fiscal year’s approved budget stands at MVR 49.8 billion.
