The Maldives Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office has initiated a review of more than 500 cases involving criminal charges, detentions, and arrests, received over a 20-day submission period by the Review Committee. A total of 539 complaints were submitted for review, and each case is currently under assessment. The review process follows Article 223(b) of the Constitution, which empowers the Prosecutor General to evaluate the legality and necessity of restrictions on an individual’s liberty, including arrests and detentions.
Under section (a) of the same article, the Prosecutor General holds the authority to adjust or revoke prosecution decisions when warranted, ensuring all actions align with constitutional and legal standards. The Review Committee, established to support this process, advises on case assessments and provides recommendations to the Prosecutor General, which may include altering or dismissing charges where appropriate.
