The Prosecutor General (PG) of the Maldives, Uz Abbas Shareef, has ordered a criminal investigation into serious violations related to the "Binveriya" and "Gedhoruveriya" schemes after revelations that regulations governing the acceptance of applications and the allocation of plots and flats were flagrantly violated.
Under Article 223(f) of the Constitution, the PG has instructed the Maldives Police Service and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to thoroughly investigate the allotment process and ensure that the procedures were followed correctly. The investigation will focus on identifying the beneficiaries and addressing any potential misconduct. If violations are found, the PG has authorized criminal charges.
The PG also emphasized the need for full transparency and instructed weekly progress updates on the investigation. In a statement on his official X account, he acknowledged public concerns and made it clear that only through a complete and swift investigation, followed by decisive action, can these issues be resolved.
The "Binveriya" and "Gedhoruveriya" schemes, originally introduced to address housing needs, are now under intense scrutiny as these violations have compromised the integrity of the process.
