Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has stated that the government's 'Magey Solar' initiative will significantly reduce electricity bills for Maldivian households. The minister made the announcement during a parliamentary session where South Hithadhoo MP Ibrahim Nazil raised concerns about the rising costs of electricity for citizens.
In response, Minister Thoriq emphasized that the government is working to address the issue and has been actively seeking solutions to lower electricity costs. He cited the high costs of importing crude oil as a major contributor to the increase in electricity bills and highlighted the government's efforts to improve power tariff structures and enhance efficiency in energy production.
The 'Magey Solar' project, scheduled to commence within a month, will focus on reducing the financial burden on consumers by integrating solar power into households. Under this initiative, households will receive 3-5 kW of solar energy based on their electricity consumption, with energy service providers determining the exact amount allocated.
Minister Thoriq also noted that renewable energy currently accounts for 33 percent of the total electricity generated in the country. The 'Magey Solar' project is a key part of President Mohamed Muizzu's broader vision to increase the country's reliance on clean energy, making electricity more affordable for Maldivians while reducing the nation’s dependence on costly imported fuel.
