Maldives Intervenes in Gaza Genocide Case at International Court of Justice

In a significant move, the Maldives has officially filed a declaration of intervention at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the case involving the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip. The case, filed by South Africa against Israel, seeks to address allegations of genocide and violations of international law in Gaza.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the Maldives’ intervention on social media, reaffirming the country’s stance on holding Israel accountable for its actions in Gaza. "Israel must be held accountable for its unlawful acts in Gaza. The rule of law must be upheld, and Israel must cease its genocidal acts against the Palestinian people," President Muizzu stated.
This intervention, in line with Article 63 of the ICJ Statute, underscores the Maldives’ commitment to peace, justice, and human rights. The President further emphasized that the Maldives would always "side with humanity, peace, and justice," expressing continued solidarity with the Palestinian people.
President Muizzu also reiterated the Maldives’ longstanding support for a two-state solution, calling for the establishment of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. "Palestine must be recognized and established based on the pre-1967 borders," he stated, reinforcing the Maldives’ dedication to achieving a just and lasting solution to the conflict.
The Maldives joins other nations in using international legal frameworks to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, ensuring that international laws, including the Genocide Convention, are upheld.
