In a bid to expedite the criminal justice process, Prosecutor General Justice (retd) Abbas Shareef met with Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau to discuss measures aimed at speeding up criminal investigations and prosecutions. The meeting took place at the Shaheed Hussain Adam Building, the police headquarters, where the two leaders expressed their commitment to improving inter-agency cooperation.
Commissioner Shujau welcomed PG Abbas, who recently assumed office, and reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining strong communication between the Maldives Police Service and the Prosecutor General's Office. Both officials emphasized the importance of streamlining their collaborative efforts to ensure timely justice.
Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef highlighted the need to address delays in the investigation and prosecution process. He assured the Commissioner that his office would offer full support to the police in expediting the submission of chargesheets once investigations were completed. "It is essential that we work together to reduce the length of criminal investigations and ensure that charges are filed without unnecessary delay," Abbas stated.
Addressing concerns about the issue of extended non-bailable detentions and protracted investigations, PG Abbas pledged to seek judicial solutions. He emphasized that resolving these concerns would be a priority during his tenure.
Both leaders acknowledged the critical role their respective institutions play in maintaining law and order in the Maldives and underscored the importance of improving efficiency in the judicial process to ensure timely justice for victims and the public. The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to enhancing collaboration in the future, laying the groundwork for reforms that aim to bring about faster resolution of criminal cases in the country.
