President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially appointed Abbas Shareef, previously the legal secretary at the President's Office, as the new Prosecutor General (PG) of the Maldives. The appointment followed a unanimous vote in parliament during an out-of-session meeting yesterday.
Abbas' nomination, submitted by President Muizzu, was assessed by the Judiciary Committee, chaired by Manadhoo MP Husnee Mubarak. After reviewing public complaints, Mubarak confirmed that no objections were received, leading to Abbas' unanimous approval by all members of parliament.
Abbas steps into the role following the dismissal of former Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem. His appointment marks a significant move as the Maldives continues to strengthen its legal and judicial institutions under the current administration.
