AI and Democracy Must Be Equally Embraced to Protect Human Rights: Minister Zameer

In a statement made on International Day of Democracy, Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer emphasized the need to treat Artificial Intelligence (AI) and democracy with equal importance to protect human rights. In a post on X, the minister highlighted the correlation between democratic values and national development, reiterating the country's commitment to free expression, human rights, and full legal empowerment.
Zameer acknowledged the role of emerging technologies, including AI, in upholding democratic norms, stating, "The evolving landscape of technology, especially AI, is contributing to the sustainability of democratic principles." This year's Democracy Day theme, "Ensuring Effective Governance of AI at All Levels", underscores the growing necessity to responsibly manage AI, according to the minister.
He also called for international cooperation in addressing the challenges posed by AI, stressing that digital innovation can be used responsibly to shape a prosperous future for the Maldives.
Every year, September 15 marks International Day of Democracy, commemorating the importance of free expression, civic rights, and the rule of law. This year, the United Nations spotlighted the potential of AI to enhance governance, reinforcing Zameer's call for its responsible integration into democratic systems.
