The government of the Maldives has announced plans to construct a new racetrack in Thilafushi following the closure of the racing and drifting track in Hulhumale'. Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu revealed the decision during a press conference at the President’s Office, stating that the Ministry had formally requested land from the Housing Ministry to facilitate the new project.
The move follows a recent ban on racing activities in Hulhumale', which was implemented due to safety concerns about high-speed racing in residential areas. The ban comes after discussions between the Ministry, the Racing Association, and the Drifting Association, aimed at addressing public safety issues and ensuring a safer environment for motorsport enthusiasts.
Minister Rafiu also highlighted that the relocation of the racetrack is in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to developing a designated, secure area for racing and drifting, ensuring the sport can thrive without endangering lives.
The Ministry is now working on a plan to expedite the construction of the Thilafushi track, which is expected to accommodate both racing and drifting activities in a controlled and safe manner.
