President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the establishment of a National Sports Fund, a strategic move aimed at transforming the Maldives' sports landscape by increasing player participation, supporting athletic development, and empowering the local sporting community. The decision was made following a proposal from Abdulla Rafiu, the Minister of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation, and approved at the latest cabinet meeting.
The cabinet resolved to initiate the necessary steps to set up the fund, which includes proposing amendments to the Sports Act. These changes will enable a more structured approach to sports funding and development in the Maldives, allowing for the sustainable growth of local talent and infrastructure.
In a recent speech at the Maldives Sports Awards 2024, Minister Rafiu introduced the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) as a key part of the nation’s long-term sports strategy. He shared that the government’s initial focus is to develop a comprehensive plan that goes beyond regional competition, aiming for global medal achievements. This ambitious approach emphasizes high-level planning, talent development, and robust support for athletes aiming to represent the Maldives internationally.
