STELCO Begins Transition to Smart Grid with Nationwide Installation of Smart Meters

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has embarked on a major initiative to modernize its electricity network by transitioning to a smart grid and installing smart meters across the Maldives. The announcement was made by STELCO's Managing Director Hussain Fahmy during a press conference organized by the company.
Fahmy stated that the company plans to provide smart meter services to all customers within the next three years, with installation work commencing this week or by early September. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the company's efforts to enhance the efficiency and reliability of its services.
The transition to a smart grid will allow STELCO to control and monitor electricity usage remotely, enabling better management of power distribution across the communities it serves. Fahmy explained that previously, the engines in STELCO's powerhouses were operated using an escort system, but they have now been upgraded to integrate with the smart grid. This upgrade will allow all transformers to be regulated and monitored from the office, improving overall operational efficiency.
Smart meters, which will be installed at no cost to customers, are expected to revolutionize how electricity consumption is managed in households and businesses. Fahmy highlighted the benefits of the new system, noting that customers will be able to monitor their electricity usage in real-time through their phones. This will enable them to track the power consumption of specific devices, such as air conditioners, and make adjustments to reduce electricity costs.
The decision to install smart meters comes in response to growing public concerns over high electricity bills, which have been a source of dissatisfaction for many residents. Despite complaints, the Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) confirmed that there were no errors in the billing process and that the figures on the invoices were accurate.
Fahmy assured customers that the smart meter system would not only provide more transparency in billing but also help them manage their energy consumption more effectively, ultimately leading to cost savings. The move to a smart grid is part of STELCO's broader strategy to enhance service delivery and support the Maldives' commitment to sustainable energy practices.
As the installation of smart meters begins, STELCO is poised to lead the country towards a more efficient and customer-centric energy future, with the smart grid playing a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for reliable and affordable electricity.
