President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has denounced the actions of the Bank of Maldives (BML) Board as a premeditated attempt to destabilize the government, labeling it as part of a broader coup d'état orchestrated by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Speaking in response to the board's recent decision, President Muizzu asserted that the move violated direct government directives and represented a calculated effort to incite public unrest.
The controversy arose as the MDP held a press conference amidst the nation's ongoing financial situation, calling on citizens to take to the streets in protest. The Maldives Police Service has since launched an investigation into what is being described as an attempt to illegally alter the government.
Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam was the first to publicly accuse the BML of colluding with the MDP in a plot to execute a financial coup in the Maldives. President Muizzu defended Shiyam’s claims, emphasizing that the bank's board acted against explicit instructions from his administration.
"The decision made by the BML Board yesterday is part of a deliberate effort by the opposition to undermine the government," President Muizzu stated. He further assured that all constitutional authorities would be engaged to prevent any unlawful change in government, referencing recent examples from neighboring countries as a cautionary tale.
The President reiterated his commitment to allowing the police investigation to proceed without interference, pledging that the public would be kept informed of any developments. He also warned that if any individuals were found guilty of involvement in the coup attempt, decisive action would be taken to hold them accountable.
President Muizzu concluded by affirming his administration's dedication to making decisions in the best interest of the Maldivian people, vowing to protect their welfare and the stability of the nation.
