Under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldives and India are preparing to initiate negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that could significantly enhance trade relations between the two countries. The announcement was made by Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, following a meeting with India's Minister of External Affairs, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, during his official visit to the Maldives.
Foreign Minister Zameer emphasized India's crucial role as a development partner for the Maldives, highlighting the substantial support India has provided in various sectors, including economy, commerce, education, health, and defense. The proposed FTA, which Zameer will oversee, is expected to simplify business operations between the two nations and open up new avenues for trade and investment.
In addition to economic collaboration, the discussions between the two ministers covered a wide range of topics, including efforts to combat terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, and human trafficking. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to working together to ensure national and regional peace and security.
Minister Zameer expressed his gratitude for India's continued support, noting that India's involvement has been instrumental in advancing various industries in the Maldives. He also conveyed optimism that the ongoing discussions would lead to stronger economic ties, enhanced defense cooperation, and mutually beneficial outcomes for both countries.
During the meeting, Dr. Jaishankar reiterated India's commitment to supporting the Maldives' development goals, and both sides are expected to sign several initiatives focused on capacity building across different sectors. The completion of numerous projects under the Exim Bank's line of credit will also be celebrated.
President Muizzu has also emphasized the importance of developing the e-commerce sector and the broader creator economy as part of his administration's economic strategy. In this context, the proposed FTA with India could play a pivotal role in achieving these objectives.
Dr. Jaishankar's visit marks his first official trip to the Maldives since assuming office for a second term, underscoring the deepening ties between the two nations and the mutual commitment to fostering a prosperous partnership.
