Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Flees Amid Mass Protests, Resigns

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fled her palace as anti-government protesters gathered nearby, according to media reports. Amidst growing unrest, Hasina has reportedly resigned from her position, although she has not yet made an official announcement. The resignation was confirmed by the Bangladesh army, who have now taken control.
Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman addressed the nation, assuring citizens that the army would resolve the ongoing crisis. He urged the public to "give a little time" to the military to bring the country back on track, adding that there was no need to declare a state of emergency or impose a curfew.
"The army is in talks with political parties to restore order in the country," General Zaman stated, highlighting the military's role in stabilizing the situation.
Reports indicate that Hasina fled amidst allegations of the army's cooperation with the protests that have been intensifying since yesterday. The army has reportedly withdrawn from certain areas, allowing protesters to enter the capital, Dhaka.
Sheikh Hasina, 76, has been in power for 16 years, initially hailed as a champion of democracy. However, in recent times, she has faced accusations of authoritarianism, imprisoning opposition leaders, and consolidating control over Bangladesh. Critics argue that these actions have made her one of the most dictatorial leaders in the country's history.
The recent protests reflect deep-seated dissatisfaction with Hasina's rule, culminating in a dramatic shift in Bangladesh's political landscape as the army takes a leading role in restoring order and initiating talks with political parties.
