The city council has announced a prohibition on vehicular traffic in Malé from 4 to 6 pm this Friday to accommodate a simultaneous march by the National Cadet Corps and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) on major streets of the city. The march is part of the celebrations for the 59th Independence Day.
The city council explained that the traffic ban during this period is necessary to manage the flow of vehicles and ensure safety during the march. Originally scheduled for the evening of Independence Day, the event was postponed to the following Friday due to inclement weather.
In previous years, Independence Day celebrations featured a variety of colorful activities. However, due to current economic difficulties, this year's celebrations will be more subdued, focusing on an official ceremony and parade.
The city council has urged residents and visitors to plan their movements accordingly and cooperate with the authorities to ensure a smooth and safe celebration. The MNDF and National Cadet Corps have expressed their commitment to delivering a dignified and memorable march, reflecting the nation’s pride and unity on this significant occasion.
