The Maldives has initiated discussions to reduce duties on its fish exports to the European Union (EU). Moreno Raymundo, the newly appointed EU Ambassador to the Maldives, met with President Dr. Muizzu to present her credentials during a ceremony at the Presidential Office. The discussions underscored several key points, with a primary focus on reducing the duty on fish caught in the Maldives and exported to the EU.
Welcoming Ambassador Raymundo, President Muizzu expressed gratitude for the EU’s continued assistance and cooperation in the Maldives' development. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the EU and the Maldives in 1983, the EU has played a significant role in supporting the country's economic growth. The Maldives exports a substantial amount of fish to EU countries, and the EU has contributed to the economic stability of the Maldives on several occasions.
The reduction in duty on fish exports is expected to significantly benefit the Maldivian fishing industry, a crucial sector of the nation's economy. By lowering trade barriers, the Maldives aims to increase its fish exports to the EU, thereby boosting revenue and fostering economic development.
The meeting also highlighted the strong partnership between the Maldives and the EU, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties. The EU's support has been instrumental in various development projects in the Maldives, and this new initiative is seen as a continuation of the collaborative efforts to enhance economic prosperity in the region.
