Addu City Power Crisis Requires Permanent Solution, Says MP Azaan

Hithadhoo Central MP Ahmed Azaan Marzooq has called for a permanent solution to the ongoing power crisis in Addu City, stressing that the government is actively addressing the issue. Azaan made these remarks during a parliamentary debate on an emergency motion raised by Hithadhoo South MP Ibrahim Naazil regarding the recent power outages in Addu.
Azaan highlighted that the power crisis in Addu is not a recent development. He reminded parliament that MP Naazil had spoken about the same issue back in 2019, yet five years later, the problem persists. Azaan clarified that the recent power disruptions were not due to a lack of maintenance but were caused by damage to a cable during road construction activities.
Currently, Addu City has a power capacity of 11 MegaWatt, while the demand is 12 MW. The power shortage was exacerbated by the shutdown of two engines, one during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration in 2023 and the other recently, both of which have since been replaced.
To address the immediate needs, two additional 2 MW engines are expected to arrive in Addu within the next two months. However, Azaan emphasized that these measures are temporary and that a permanent solution is necessary.
"The long-term solution is to build a new power station," Azaan stated. He announced that the current government has signed an agreement with a Chinese company to construct a 31 MW power station, which will provide a lasting resolution to Addu's power issues.
The government's commitment to building this new power station reflects a strategic effort to ensure a stable and sufficient power supply for Addu City, ultimately improving the quality of life for its residents and supporting the city's growth and development.
The ongoing power crisis has significantly impacted daily life in Addu, with frequent outages causing inconvenience and disrupting business activities. The new power station is expected to not only meet the current demand but also accommodate future growth, providing a sustainable energy solution for the city.
By taking these steps, the government aims to restore reliable power to Addu City and prevent future crises, demonstrating a proactive approach to infrastructure development and public service delivery.
