MP Azaan Urges Parliament to Grant Supreme Court Judges a Chance to Respond Before Dismissal Vote

Ahmed Azaan, MP for Hithadhoo Central Constituency
Ahmed Azaan, MP for Hithadhoo Central, has called on Parliament to allow Supreme Court Justice Dr. Azmiraldha Zahir and Mahaaz Ali Zahir an opportunity to respond to the ethical misconduct case filed against them, before proceeding to a dismissal vote. His remarks came during the debate on the Judiciary Committee’s report, which concluded that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) had properly investigated the case and sent it to the Parliament floor.
Azaan strongly criticized the handling of the case, arguing that it lacked transparency and failed to meet both local legal standards and international best practices. He noted that neither the JSC nor the Judiciary Committee allowed the justices to present their defense. He also pointed out that the hearings were conducted in secret, and that evidence submitted by the judges had been disregarded by the JSC.
Referencing concerns raised by international bodies such as the UN, Commonwealth, and foreign bar councils, Azaan stressed the importance of fair process, especially for judges of the highest court. He added that the Parliament Counsel General had also flagged legal violations in the process.
Azaan condemned the political manipulation of the judiciary across successive governments, stating that the institution continues to be used as a tool by those in power. He contrasted the treatment of ordinary citizens with those who commit large-scale corruption, arguing that true justice remains out of reach for the poor and vulnerable.
Calling on fellow MPs to uphold their constitutional oath, Azaan warned against repeating past injustices now that the ruling PNC holds a supermajority. He urged Parliament to correct the course by ensuring the dismissed justices are heard before any vote takes place.
