Maldives to Implement Inclusive Disaster Warning System

The Maldives has announced a strategic roadmap to develop an inclusive disaster warning system, following the launch of the Early Warning for All Initiative during the COP summit in November 2022. This initiative aims to establish a robust warning system that ensures even individuals with disabilities are alerted in the event of a disaster.
The roadmap development, facilitated by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, positions the Maldives as a pioneer in Asia for creating an inclusive disaster warning system. The initiative underscores the nation's commitment to safeguarding all community members, particularly the most vulnerable.
The announcement was made at the 'Training Workshop on Inclusive Communication for Maldives Early Warning Systems,' organized in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Meteorological Department. NDMA Secretary General Safeenaaz Hasaan highlighted the significance of this programme, noting, "The Maldives is the first country in Asia to begin work on a disaster warning system that involves everyone, including persons with disabilities."
Safeenaaz emphasized the pressing need for such systems in Asia, where natural disasters frequently occur. Strengthening early warning systems can significantly mitigate the impact of these events. "It is crucial to develop a system that ensures even children with different disabilities can be warned of disasters," she said.
The workshop, which spans two days, features the participation of 50 employees from relevant agencies. Participants will be trained on the importance of creating inclusive warning systems and the methods to achieve this.
The initiative reflects the Maldives' proactive approach to disaster risk reduction and its dedication to fostering resilient communities. By ensuring that every individual, regardless of their abilities, receives timely disaster warnings, the Maldives sets a precedent for other nations to follow.
The development of this inclusive disaster warning system is a significant step towards enhancing national safety and resilience. It highlights the Maldives' leadership in promoting comprehensive disaster preparedness measures that cater to the needs of all citizens.
