The Maldives youth handball and basketball teams have made a remarkable start, winning their first matches in the ongoing international tournaments. Competing in the IHF Trophy in India and the SABA Under-18 qualifiers in the Maldives, the young athletes have brought pride to their nation.
Both Maldivian handball teams secured victories against Nepal on Wednesday. The Under-18 handball team triumphed with a score of 36-31, with Shaheem Lahfan earning the man of the match award. In the Under-20 category, the Maldivian team defeated Nepal 30-28, with goalkeeper Hussain Yanal Akram named man of the match.
In basketball, the Maldives Under-18 team achieved a decisive 66-55 victory over Bangladesh in their opening match of the SABA Championship.
The success in these three international matches represents a significant morale boost for the Maldives' sports community. The Under-20 handball team is set to face India in their second match of the IHF Trophy tournament, scheduled for 5:30 PM IST. Meanwhile, the Under-18 basketball team will compete against India at 3:30 PM IST in the SABA qualifiers.
