MMPRC Signs Three-Year Agreement with WeChat to Enhance Payment Options for Chinese Tourists

The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has entered into a three-year agreement with China's WeChat, aiming to enhance the payment options available for Chinese tourists visiting the Maldives. This strategic partnership will encourage Maldivian businesses to accept payments via WeChat, providing Chinese tourists with a familiar and preferred payment method.
The agreement was signed today by MMPRC's Deputy Managing Director, Zihuny Rasheed, and Etienne Ng, Country Manager for Singapore and Regional Director for South East Asia at WeChat Pay. Under this agreement, MMPRC will support more local entrepreneurs in adopting WeChat Pay, thereby offering a seamless payment experience for Chinese visitors.
The integration of WeChat Pay into the Maldivian market is expected to significantly improve the convenience and satisfaction of Chinese tourists, who will now be able to make payments with ease during their stay. This initiative aligns with MMPRC's broader goal of enhancing the overall tourist experience in the Maldives.
In addition to MMPRC's efforts, the Bank of Maldives has announced that it will commence using WeChat payments starting May 14. This move further reinforces the commitment to providing diverse and convenient payment solutions for international tourists, particularly those from China.
This agreement marks a significant step forward in strengthening the Maldives' appeal as a tourist destination for Chinese travellers, facilitating smoother transactions and fostering stronger economic ties between the two nations.
