People’s National Congress (PNC) Chairman and Presidential Special Advisor Abdul Raheem Abdullah's political calculations have coincided with the results of yesterday's parliamentary elections, Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam said.
In an interview with the online newspaper Mihaaru on November 6th, 2023, before President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu took office, Abdul Raheem said that the PPM/PNC coalition would win more than 70 seats in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
The PNC won a total of 66 seats in yesterday’s parliamentary elections. The seats secured by the government, independent candidates backed by the president, the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and the Maldives National Party (MNP) total at around 76. MDA and MNP are coalition partners of the ruling PNC.
Before this prediction, Abdul Raheem had said that President Dr. Muizzu would win a 60 percent majority in the presidential election. The president went on to receive 59 percent of the vote in the second round.
Minister Shiyam said he would like to congratulate all the PNC candidates and their teams on their wins in the 20th parliamentary elections held yesterday, adding that Abdul Raheem’s calculations had been on point with the number of seats won by the government and its coalition.
He added that the ruling coalition's victory in the parliamentary elections shows the support of the people for President Dr. Muizzu.
