The Maldives Zakat House has distributed more than 700,000 MVR in aid to the needy in February alone.
According to the February figures released by the Islamic Ministry, 829,948 MVR has been allocated to the Zakat House till last month. During the period, 740,805 MVR was spent on 69 people who applied for assistance.
How the assistance has been given:
- 245,948 MVR for cancer treatment
- 16,962 MVR for heart surgery
- 76,329 MVR for transplant
- 16,962 MVR for brain surgery
- Other 473,746 MVR
- 12,750 MVR as emergency assistance
The Maldives Zakat House was inaugurated in early January this year. The agency was established to strengthen the Zakat system in Maldives, and to develop the Zakat Fund to ensure that the benefits of Zakat are widely available to the people who need it most in the country.
The duties of the Zakat House include arranging for the collection of Zakat and the distribution of Zakat to the eligible beneficiaries. It also includes the announcement of the rate of property zakat every six months, and the compilation and maintenance of the register of poor and needy in collaboration with the relevant authorities.
In addition, the institution spreads the knowledge of Zakat and educates the public, businesses, and government agencies about the rules of Zakat.
