A Belgian company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of an integrated tourism zone in Gaafu Alif Atoll, as well an international airport in G.A. Villingili.
The MoU was signed by Construction and Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdullah Muththalib on behalf of the Government of Maldives. Servé Dolmans, Business Developer at N.V. BESIX S.A., signed on behalf of his company.
The 44th largest construction company in the world, N.V. BESIX is very proficient in the field. The company has done major works including the construction of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
Maldives will receive an investment of between $500 million and $750 million with the project. When the Villingili International Airport project is completed, a yacht marina, a heliport and 17 tourist resorts will be developed in the area, adding more than 5,000 tourist beds.
Under the project, BESIX proposes to develop a 2.2 km runway, a transit hotel, all the facilities of an international airport, luxury resorts and a yacht marina.
