The President of the Republic of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has said that the Maldivian Army will soon have the necessary capabilities to maintain the maritime area and the Special Economic Zone.
Delivering his first presidential statement after taking office, the President said he will continue working to strengthen the national defense force, following the examples of the strongest heroes of Maldives. The President noted that the heroes of the time obtained resources from abroad.
"There is a story in Maldivian history that during the reign of the Great King, he obtained 14 guns from Indonesia and built towers at Furamalé to protect Maldives from the attacks of the Malabars and Cannanore Ali Raja.”
The President noted the importance of the efforts made by the ancient leaders to strengthen Maldivian defense forces.
The President further said that he believes that Maldives’ military capabilities should be further strengthened in all areas with the assistance of modern equipment to defend the country by road, sea and air.
The President said the government has started work to increase the capacity of the Maldivian Army to defend Maldives. The President said that the National Defense Force will soon have the military capacity to maintain the 900,000 square kilometer Special Economic Zone (SEZ), or Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
"The ability to maintain Sri Lanka's 900,000 square kilometer Exclusive Economic Zone 24 hours a day will hopefully be established soon," he said.
He said that while protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, he would prioritize the "pro-Maldives" policy of giving priority to the people and the country.
