Broken Generator in Fuvahmulah not Maintained During 30,000 Hours of Operation

The Fenaka Corporation is working to find a new generator to solve the power shortage caused by the breakdown of a generator used to supply electricity to the city.
The city has been experiencing power outages since December 11, 2023, with one of the seven generator sets used to provide electricity to the city. Some parts of the generator have been damaged, making it unusable, and the electricity generation, as a result, has been reduced from 4850 kW to 4000 kW.
The generator set was damaged during the rainy season and the power outage was not expected. However, the weather has improved and the power consumption is expected to increase.
According to Fenaka, they had sent a new, unused generator to the island on the 2nd of January.
A new 800 kW generator has been ordered under emergency procurement. However, the generator has to be imported as there is no generator of that capacity available in Maldives at the moment.
In addition to the procurement of a generator, the company is also working to repair the existing generator in Fuvahmulah. The generator is already in transit to the island, so the issue will be resolved with haste, Fenaka has said.
Further, the company is planning to install a 1,200 kW generator in Fuvahmulah as part of its preparations for the upcoming month of Ramadan.
Fenaka noted that many of the generators have been damaged due to lack of attention to repair and maintenance in recent years. The company said the generator had not been repaired even after 30,000 hours of operation.
