The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sent a request to the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) to prosecute former Maldives Gas Managing Director Abdullah Maumoon in a corruption case.
Maumoon is charged with taking bribes during the procurement of cooking gas (LPG) from a foreign company during his tenure as MD of Maldives Gas.
The ACC said the investigation proved that Maumoon had taken 3,106,189.38 MVR as bribe from a foreign company during the procurement of LPG for Maldives Gas.
The money was deposited in several companies allegedly linked to him and some of his family members, the ACC said.
The ACC has sent a total of seven charges against Maumoon to the prosecutor.
He is, under the Prevention and Prohibition of Corruption Act, charged with taking bribes in connection with a public act, attempting to commit an offence, soliciting and conspiring to commit an offense and accepting bribes, and abuse of official influence for the purpose of obtaining illegal benefits.
The ACC has also decided to recover Rs 3,106,189.38 from Maumoon, as the ACC will seek a fine of the same amount for Maumoon to the government.
