President’s Permission is not Necessary for Transportation of Patients: Minister Ghassan

Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon has said that there is no need to ask the President for permission to bring people from the atolls to the Malé city for medical treatment.
Minister Ghassan has stated that, according to standard operation procedures, the President does not need to be informed or give permission for medical evacuations. Some media outlets have stated that the boy’s transportation was delayed because the President did not give his permission for the Indian Dornier aircraft to be used, however the Minister has refuted this theory.
Minister Ghassan explains standard operating procedures for medical evacuations.
The child’s transportation was delayed on Thursday due to the time it took to charter a flight with Maldivian Airlines. However, the child was eventually brought to Malé and treated at IGMH.

Dhiyares has reported that reliable sources confirmed the boy was brain dead by the time the hospital had concluded that he had to be medically evacuated to Malé city for treatment.

The child passed away in the ICU of IGMH at around 11:30 am yesterday.

Opposition MDP activists have raised their voices on social media, blaming the President and his administration for the boy’s death, citing the delay in transportation.

Ghassan said the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) do not require the President's permission or notification. There is a collaboration between the relevant agencies to arrange for medical evacuations with haste after they are notified by the need for transportation by the regional medical centers.

Responding to criticism of the government for not using India’s Dornier aircraft, Ghassan said that according to statistics available from 2021 onwards, 93% of the medical evacuations during that period were carried out using the national airline.
