On a phone call, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu congratulated Adam Azim on his victory in the mayoral election for Male’ city. Azim was the candidate from the Maldivian Democratic Party, the opposition of the current government.
His victory in this by-election sees him set to serve a 2.5 year term. This is half the regular term as he takes over from Dr. Muizzu, who stepped down from the role to assume the presidency in November last year. The President has told the Mayor-elect that the government would offer their full support and urged the Mayor-elect to aid him in achieving the government’s vision for a decentralized form of governance.
The government has begun the process of transferring responsibility of municipal services in Hulhumale’ to the Male’ City Council, which is in accordance with the “Hafuthaa 14” roadmap. This transfer is part of set of pledges made by Dr. Muizzu before assuming office. In addition to this, the government has announced the acquisition of funds for a mega-project aimed at solving the housing shortage in Male’ city, along with the redevelopment of the roads in the capital. Currently, the government is planning the financing of public low-interest loan schemes for the purchase of apartments and housing construction.
