Maldives Government Affirms Support for One-China Policy

In a joint communique from the Maldivian and Chinese governments today, the Government of Maldives has affirmed its support for the one-China policy and the existence of a singular Chinese state, with a sole legal government representing the territories that fall under its domain. This is inclusive of Taiwan, which Maldives recognizes as an inalienable part of Chinese territory.
The Maldives government has further stated that it would oppose any “statement or action that undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” including the rejection of all “‘Taiwan independence’ separatist activities.” The statement adds that the Government of Maldives is against any outside actors interfering in the internal affairs of China, and supports the total reunification of the Chinese state.
