The Government of Maldives has reaffirmed its steadfast adherence to the One China Policy, recognizing the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government representing the entirety of China and acknowledging Taiwan as an integral part of China’s territory.
In a statement issued on 29 December 2025, the government emphasized that this position has been consistently upheld since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and China in 1972. The statement noted that this long-standing policy reflects the Maldives’ enduring commitment to the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, mutual respect, and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.
The government expressed concern over actions by certain parties that seek to undermine these principles and interfere in the internal matters of sovereign nations, stressing the importance of peaceful coexistence and respect for international norms.
Reaffirming its foreign policy stance, the Maldives underscored its commitment to strengthening its long-standing friendship and partnership with China. The government stated that bilateral relations will continue to be guided by trust, mutual benefit, and shared aspirations for peace, stability, and sustainable development.
