Maldives Achieves Remarkable Increase in Average Life Expectancy to 80 Years, says Health Minister

MALÉ, Maldives - In a significant milestone for the Maldives, Health Minister Ahmed Naseem announced yesterday that the average life expectancy in the archipelago nation has now reached an impressive 80 years. Minister Naseem attributed this remarkable achievement to the collaborative efforts between the government and international agencies, resulting in a notable increase in the average lifespan of the local population.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion of World Health Day, Minister Naseem highlighted the positive impact of the government's initiatives on maternal and infant health. He emphasized that the Maldives has successfully curbed the number of infant and maternal deaths during childbirth, thereby significantly enhancing the overall well-being of the population.
"In the 1960s, the average life expectancy of a native individual in the Maldives was merely 39 years. Today, I am proud to announce that we have raised this figure to 80 years," declared Minister Naseem. This extraordinary progress is a testament to the nation's commitment to improving the health and longevity of its citizens, despite global challenges in maternal and infant health.
Minister Naseem further underscored the Maldives' achievements in disease prevention through vaccination efforts. He highlighted that numerous diseases, protected by effective vaccines, have been brought under control within the country's borders. Moreover, the Maldives has also achieved the commendable feat of ensuring that unborn children are shielded from the transmission of HIV and syphilis from their mothers, a significant step forward in safeguarding the health of future generations.
However, the minister stressed the importance of a holistic approach to healthcare, asserting that relying solely on hospitals and health centers would not suffice. "When we strive to ensure the health and well-being of our community, it is essential to involve the entire society along with other social services," Minister Naseem emphasized. Primary healthcare should serve as the foundation for these efforts, necessitating the cooperation and active participation of the community as a whole.
