A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Maldivian government and Chinese officials to explore the feasibility of constructing four hospitals in the Maldives. The signing ceremony, which took place on Sunday, was attended by Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Wang Lixin.
The State Minister for Health, Ahmed Adil, signed the 'Letters of Exchange on the Feasibility Study on Hospitals in Maldives' on behalf of the Maldivian government. The four hospitals will be built on islands in the northern and southern Maldives, specifically HA. Dhidhdhoo, R. Alifushi, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, and GA. Villingili.
In addition to the hospital project, three other agreements were signed during the ceremony. The 'MoU between China International Development Cooperation Agency of the Government of the People's Republic of China and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives on Development Cooperation Plan (2023-2025)' focuses on promoting collaboration in areas such as healthcare, climate change, infrastructure, agriculture, people-to-people exchanges, and disaster prevention and reduction. The agreement was signed by Foreign Secretary Ahmed Latheef on behalf of the Maldivian government.
State Minister for Arts, Culture, and Heritage Mohamed Thoriq signed the 'Letters of Exchange on Renovation of the Maldives National Museum', while State Minister for National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure Akram Kamaluddin signed the 'Letters of Exchange on the Maintenance of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge'.
During the ceremony, Minister Shahid emphasized the importance of critical infrastructure development, such as hospitals, in improving the daily lives of Maldivian people. Vice Chairman Deng Boqin also spoke and assured full cooperation from CIDCA in the implementation of the hospital and other development projects.
Deng also expressed an interest in collaborating with the Maldives on the Global Security Initiative (GSI), a plan proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in April 2022. The close relationship between the Maldives and China was emphasized throughout the ceremony, with Minister Shahid thanking the Chinese government for their contributions to the Maldives' socio-economic development.
