Presidential candidate of opposition People's Progressive Party (PPM) President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.
President Yameen was found guilty of accepting a bribe and laundering money. On the money laundering charges he was sentenced to 5 years in prison and 4 years was given for the bribery charges.
Without going into any detail on how the judge derived the verdict, the judge stated that the former president was guilty of both charges.
It has been revealed before that the verdict was prepaid by Misbah another judge at the criminal court. Details of the verdicts were shared with senior officials of the government last week.
President Yameen is the presidential candidate of PPM the largest opposition party of the Maldives. The opposition has rejected the court's decision to jail President Yameen.
