AFCONS employees stop work over non-payment of salaries

Employees at the company's Male' site have stopped working at the company's Male' site over non-payment of salaries from AFCONS, which has been awarded the bridge project with a $500 million loan from India to connect Male' to Villimale' with Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi.

Afcons was contracted to develop Male'-Thilamale bridge which is being developed under a loan from India.

On receiving information that the workers had stopped working there, journalists from TMJ checked the area and found that there were no employees on the site. In the morning, some employees were deployed at the site, but they were reported to have left. According to sources, the Afcons employees left the area after complaining that they were not being paid properly. However, the office coordinating the construction of the bridge set up by AFCONS and the government has denied the claims.

Workers of Afcons protested even yesterday over the non-payment of salaries.
