On the occasion of Victory Day, celebrated each year on November 3, Former President and opposition leader, President Yameen Abdul Qayyoom took to Twitter to share his thoughts in a Tweet.
In his Tweet, President Yameen described today as “the dreaded Sikka Day”, indicating the participation of First Lady Fazna Ahmed’s father, (Sikka) Ahmed Ismail Manik in the devastating coup d'état orchestrated in the Maldives on November 3, 1988.
Abdulla Luthfee, lead orchestrator of the coup with the assistance of armed Tamil mercenaries, was Sikka Ahmed Ismail Manik’s business partner and co-conspirator.
In his poem, President Yameen recounted the Tamil attack on the Maldives, with grenades. He also narrated that a “savior force” came in defense of the nation and tributed the 19 Maldivians martyred in the battle.
While the day marks the sacrifice of brave Maldivians on the day of victory, no celebrations of accolades have come to pass in honor of their sacrifices. Furthermore, while the president had refrained from even acknowledging the date last year, the national television also circumvented special programmes to mark the day.
Besides, the Minister of Defense Mariya Didi had called the soldiers who fought against the Tamils, weak and measly cowards.
