Former President and opposition leader Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayyoom said that even the supposedly joyous occasion of National Day calls for tears of deep sorrow.
Tweeting on the eve of National Day, President Yameen had expressed sadness over the current state of affairs.
Yameen said that this is a dark and gloomy period in time for the Maldives and that it causes him deep sadness. He said that despite the present state of national affairs, he wishes the people a happy and prosperous National Day.
President Yameen noted that the National Day celebrates the battles of one of the quintessential heroes of Maldivian history, As-Sulṭaan al-Ghaazee Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-A'uzam (Boduthakurufaanu) and yet the tears that the day brings are full of unkept deep sorrow.
