Pres Yameen to Qasim, Nazim: traitors until death

President Abdullah Yameen has dealt a strong blow to Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim and Maldives National Party (MNP) leader Mohamed Nazim, labelling them as traitors until the very end.
In a tweet posted on Sunday, President Yameen said that both Nazim and Qasim’s efforts to distance themselves from the current status of the nation was ‘meek’. He said the two were implicit in the abyss the nation was in. President Yameen capped the tweet by calling them traitors till the end.
Both Nazim and Qasim, as well as their respective parties, have attempted to distance themselves from the Government. This came amid allegations of extramarital affairs, homosexual affairs, and other such behavior from ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
While MDP is the ruling party, Qasim Ibrahim’s JP is the second largest coalition partner. JP Member Faisal Naseem is the Vice President, while Dr Abdullah Mausoom serves as Tourism Minister.
Nazim, former Defense Minister under President Yameen, was elected as Member of Parliament on a JP ticket. Months after his election, he had split from the Party, forming MNP. Nazim’s brother Adam Azim is CEO of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Plc (MTCC).
Both the parties had criticized the revelations coming from MDP’s civil strife, with the duo making indirect remarks to the administration. However, Nazim and Qasim were instrumental in bringing this administration to power. Both have profited off of this administration’s generosity as well.

President Yameen had also criticized the sheikhs aligning with the other coalition partner, Adhaalath Party (AP). He said they had ‘found deliverance’ in the Solih administration.

The sheikhs of AP have defended President Solih, in spite of Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed accusing the President of having an extramarital affair.

Over the weekend, Speaker Nasheed made serious allegations against President Solih, after his brother, Nazim Sattar was arrested on sodomy charges. Nasheed claimed that he had photographic evidence of President Solih’s affair, and was ready to expose any and all members of MDP who engaged in illicit behavior.
