ADK conducts first total shoulder replacement surgery in Maldives
ADK hospital has conducted the first ever total shoulder replacement surgery in the country.
In a presser held in the Hospital, ADK Hospital Managing Director Ahmed Af’aal and some of the doctors had briefed on the procedure.
Shoulder replacement surgery is a procedure where damaged parts of the shoulder are replaced with prosthesis. A recovery period of 8 -12 weeks is given for patients, with additional treatment recommended for during the period.
“Surgery was led by visiting surgeon Prof. Bancha Chernchujit and our own Dr Mishwar with assistance of rest of orthopedic team, anesthesia team, orthopedic OT teach and nursing team,”

The 59-year-old Maldivian suffered from advanced stage osteoarthritis. He had suffered from shoulder joint issues for around 25 years and was bed ridden for the most part.
Previously, Maldivians had to travel abroad for such treatment.
ADK Consultant in Orthopedics Dr. Mohamed Mishwar Ashfaq said that total shoulder replacements are far less common than other forms of joint replacement surgeries.
Senior Consultant in Orthopedics Dr. Hussain Shakeel said the availability of surgery in the country would alleviate financial and other pressures on patients.
ADK provides this surgery for MVR 117,000 (US$ 7,569.90). The surgery is yet to be provided under Aasandha health insurance scheme. ADK informs that they are working to facilitate this as well.
