Parliament on Monday rejected the emergency motion filed by Maduvvaree Constituency Member of Parliament Adam Shareef Umar, on providing assistance to Maldivians living in Sri Lanka.
The emergency motion was tabled for Monday’s Parliament session.
In his motion, MP Adam Shareef said that Sri Lankans and Maldivians living in Sri Lanka have been severely impacted by the ongoing protests, economic pressures, and curfews imposed. As there was a significant number of Maldivians living in Sri Lanka, both for residential and educational purposes, Adam Shareef’s emergency motion called on the Government and the Embassy of Maldives in Sri Lanka to check up on all those Maldivians and provide assistance where necessary. The motion also called on the authorities to ensure and provide security for all Maldivians.
Eleven MPs had voted to debate on the motion, while 44 MPs had voted against the motion.
