Speaker Nasheed Requests Opposition Members To Stop Supporting The India Out Movement

Majlis Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has called on members of the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to not participate in the "India Out" movement led by opposition leader, former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom. The "India Out" movement was a grassroots movement, later adopted by the opposition, which called for the removal of Indian military personnel and assets from the Maldives.
In a tweet he posted today, Speaker Nasheed claimed that the movement led against India did not enjoy the support of the people, and would harm the Maldivian people at large.
"I sincerely ask PPM members to not participate in the opposition movement, for the sake of the nation", wrote Speaker Nasheed.
The opposition coalition have stated on multiple occasions that the "India Out" campaign was not anti-India, but rather it was against India's stationing of its military personnel and assets in the Maldives.
Speaker Nasheed's tweet comes as the opposition leader, former President Abdullah Yameen, prepares to travel to Mahibadhoo (Alif Dhaalu Atoll) to raise support for the movement. Preparations have been made prior to his arrival.
