Majlis Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, also leader of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party, has responded to defences of allegations made against Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, a contender for the role of MDP's chairperson.
Ibrahim "Ibray" Waheed had defended Fayyaz from allegations that had been made against him. There are several allegations that members of the MDP are having their jobs threatened as a result of the ongoing campaign. An argument regarding these allegations flared up on the MDP National Majlis' WhatsApp group.
Ibray had asked on the group if Fayyaz had threatened the jobs of Economic Ministry employees who had engaged in "anti-campaign" activities against him; members of the MDP should not be threatened, he had said.
Responding to Ibray, Nasheed had asked if he, himself, were to go out saying whatever that came to his mind. He said that it was good to consider the effects one's actions would have on other people.
Ibray had responded that Nasheed had indeed taught him what the freedom of expression was, and he would vote for Nasheed even if he were to run for President tomorrow.
However, he had said, he got "torn to pieces" when he had run for a post in 2017. The only people who had defended him had been Fayyaz and MP Rozaina Adam (MDP-Meedhoo). He said that he would always remember that.
Nasheed is an ardent critic of Fayyaz.
