Opposition leader, former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has stated that the sole responsibility was not to praise the President’s ability to cook a good omelette.
In a special interview given to Channel 13, the former President said that the media’s responsibility was to keep the government accountable. Even so, he said, the media should report on the good things that the government does.
“The media should be independent”, he said. “If the government does wrong, the media should report it. If institutions don’t work, it should also be spoken about”.
He said that the government’s beneficial projects should also be reported. However, he said, those must not be the only things reported. The main responsibility of the media would be to report on the government’s wrongdoings, he said.
