The Maldives Police Service have announced that a police station is being constructed in the Hulhumale Phase 2 area in order to provide closer policing for the residents of the newly-populated area. The Hulhumale Phase 2 area had been populated on October 2021.
The MPS stated that it was expected that the police station would be completed and would be open for service by early 2022. As the station would provide closer policing for the Phase 2 population, the MPS also stated that the station would be posted with an "appropriate number" of police officers.
The MPS also stated that many people currently visit the Phase 2 area and since a lot of construction work was still underway, special focus is being given even now on maintaining the safety and security of residents. Patrolling and awareness programmes are being conducted by the Police on a regular basis, the MPS stated.
Most of the cases reported to the MPS from the Phase 2 area are traffic accidents and thefts, stated the MPS. Most cases of theft involved stealing property from the Phase 2 construction sites.
The MPS stated that the peoples' co-operation with the Police would improve the effectiveness of their work, as the establishment of a low-crime, safe environment required the co-operation of the Police and the community.
