Attack on President Nasheed

Adhuham Sentenced To 23 Years In Prison

The Criminal Court has sentenced Mohamed Adhuham, who had been found guilty of triggering a bomb meant to kill Majlis Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, to a prison sentence of 23 years.
Adhuham had plead guilty to his involvement in the attack, as per a plea bargain into which he had entered with the State. He had been sentenced today after an expedited hearing.
The judges panel had offered Adhuham the opportunity to withdraw his plea, but he had refused.
He had said that he had committed the crime as the result of religious beliefs that he had held, and he sought the forgiveness of Speaker Nasheed and anyone else who may have been harmed in the attack. He assured the court that he would never do such an act again.
The judges’ panel unanimously ruled Adhuham to be guilty of the crime. He was then sentenced to 23 years in prison.
After deducting the time that he had spent in pre-trial detention, Adhuham will be serving 22 years, 4 months, and 21 days in prison.
As per the plea bargain, the State had dropped the charge of conspiring to commit an act of terrorism. Adhuham had been charged with supporting a terrorist group, committing an act of terrorism, and of causing harm with a deadly weapon.
