Death And Disappearance Commission To Travel To Malaysia To Interrogate Maldivians

The Commission on Deaths and Disappearances (CDD) established by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to travel to Malaysia for an interrogation required for a case under investigation.
According to “Dhauru” newspaper, a team comprising of personnel from the CDD and the Maldives Police Service would be travelling to Malaysia on Wednesday.
The team would be staying at the Kubti Bintan Hotel on the 21st of the month. As the hotel does not accept credit card payments, the Maldivian High Commission in Malaysia had requested the Foreign Ministry to make the payment. A letter sent by the High Commission to the Foreign Ministry requesting that the payment be made was shared with The Maldives Journal.
The CDD’s focus of investigation has been the disappearance of Ahmed Rilwan, the murder of Yameen Rasheed, and the murder of the religious scholar and parliamentarian Dr Afrasheem Ali.
Getting justice for these deaths and the disappearance was one of the Solih administration’s campaign pledges. However, to date, none of the cases have been investigated to completion and no new suspects have been identified for any of the cases.
The CDD’s inefficacy has drawn much criticism. Some of the critics include parliamentarians of the ruling MDP who have called for the dissolution of the CDD.
Speaking with The Maldives Journal, a member of the Commission answered that “only a few” members were actually travelling, and the participation of the Police had nothing to do with the Commission.
