Yameen Instructs Opposition To Intensify Defend Maldives Campaign

Former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, the leader of the opposition, has instructed the opposition Progressive Congress Coalition's leaders to intensify the "Defend Maldives" campaign which calls for the removal of Indian military from the Maldives.
The former President was acquitted by the Supreme Court yesterday from a 2019 Criminal Court verdict that had sentenced him to a five-year prison sentence. Last night, he had met with the leadership of the both parties of the opposition coalition. He had thanked the persistent work that they had done during his absence for the good of the nation to free him.
Plans to intensify the party's activities and to travel into the islands were discussed. He had also instructed the leaders to intensify the "Defend Maldives" campaign.
The "Defend Maldives" campaign calls for the removal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives, and to cancel the opaque military agreements that the Solih administration had signed with India. The opposition had organised several large demonstrations in Male City, as well as one large demonstration in Fuvahmulah City under the "Defend Maldives" banners. The campaign had also seen the signing of a petition.
The former President met with opposition parliamentarians in addition to party leaders last night. He had thanked them for their work.
