Several well-wishers and supporters gathered outside former President Abdullah Yameen’s residence after he returned from the Supreme Court verdict hearing during which he had been acquitted of the 2019 Criminal Court verdict that had sentenced him to five years in prison and to pay a USD$5 million fine.
As the former President exited his vehicle, many well-wishers, who had been waiting outside his residence on Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Malé City, drew close to greet him and shake his hand. He spent half an hour greeting his well-wishers before he retreated into his residence.
Many of the well-wishers congratulated him for the courage that he had displayed during his legal proceedings. Many others had also mentioned that their hope for the nation’s progress had “awakened” on his freedom.
The former President had been incarcerated for more than 700 days. He had been temporarily transferred to house-arrest due to the pandemic.
