Govt Will Stop At Nothing To Hold Onto Power: MP Shiyam

MP Ahmed Shiyam (Naifaru), the Vice President of the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has stated that this government “will stop at nothing to hold onto power”.
MP Shiyam made this statement on Twitter, sharing a video of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih; as a presidential candidate in 2018; speaking against the number of political appointments that had been made by the Yameen administration.
In the video, Solih said that the Yameen administration was spending MVR 300 million on political appointments, and he believed that more qualified people could be hired through the Civil Service for that money. He had also accused the Yameen administration of appointing state ministers and coordinators “by the dozen”. He had said that this was not how things were done in India and America.
Solih had said that his government would reduce his political appointments, and also reduce the State’s expenditure on such appointments.
MP Shiyam commented that people who would deceive the people in the pursuit of power would stop at nothing to hold onto power. He added that as per next year’s budget alone, the Solih administration has planned for 1,043 new political appointments which will cost the State MVR 400 million.
