The opposition coalition have shared their concerns; regarding the State’s accusations against and treatment of former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom; with the European Union.
MP Mohamed Saeed (Maavah), the Vice President of the opposition People’s National Congress tweeted about their meeting with the EU’s diplomatic mission in Sri Lanka. MP Saeed mentioned that many of the opposition’s thoughts had been shared with the EU.
MP Saeed also mentioned that they had shared the opposition’s concerns about the government’s exertion of undue influence over the judiciary. The opposition have always maintained that the November 2019 verdict against former President Yameen had been influenced by the government’s intervention in the judicial process.
They had also shared concerns regarding the Judicial Service Commission, and also about the audio recordings of judges who had sat on the panel that sentenced the former President to five years in prison.
They had also informed the EU that one of the voices had been positively identified through forensic analysis as belonging to one of the judges on the panel. The JSC proceeded to temporarily suspend the judge.
MP Saeed also mentioned that the opposition held that the accusations against the former President were baseless.
MP Saeed also shared the opposition’s concerns given that 700 days had passed since the former President had been “illegally” incarcerated.
